Have you ever felt like reading the Bible was "boring"? Or that spending time in the Word was a chore, something you were "supposed to do" and then felt guilty for feeling that way? Phew, it's good to know I'm not alone in these experiences. I've thought to myself during different seasons, "why am I not passionate about reading the Bible and spending time with Jesus?" I've even prayed for a desire to spend time with him, but also realized I don't think any friend or spouse ever wants to hear "I've been praying for a desire to spend time with you!"

I've thought passion for the Word of God should just BE, that it shouldn't have to be forced or developed, but how wrong I have been! Genuine passion cannot precede discipline. If I want to be passionate about the Word of God, I must first be disciplined, which births a hunger, resulting in passion and the cycle continues. When it comes to spending time with the Lord, it can be easy to feel that discipline is faking the relationship.

Do you know the amount of times I've felt like I was just "doing my Christianly duty" by reading the Word and didn't feel some incredible emotional revelation? Too many to count. Although at times it can feel dry and boring and like a duty, when your heart is committed with perseverance and discipline to see the Lord through the eyes of Scripture, I promise you hunger and passion will come! And then reading the Word no longer is just text on thin paper, it becomes hearty bread and cool water that nourishes your soul and strengthens your bones!
